Author: Delia Owens
Actress, producer, and book lover Reese Witherspoon features a new adaptation within the works: a movie adaptation of Delia Owens‘s #1 NY Times bestselling debut Where the Crawdads Sing. The Where the Crawdads Sing movie has readers everywhere excited to ascertain this story hit the large screen, and it’s not hard to ascertain why.
Set on the North Carolina coast, Where the Crawdads Sing tells the story of Kya Clark, a mysterious girl who comes aged within the marsh, discovering romance — and suspicions of killing an area boy — along the way. The NY Times (New York Times) review called the novel “painfully beautiful.”
Reese Witherspoon and her partner Lauren Levy Neustadter will produce the novel through her Hello Sunshine media company alongside Fox 2000 and Elizabeth Gabler. Witherspoon has been an enormous fan of the book ever since she read it, choosing it as her Hello Sunshine Book Club pick this past September. In announcing the Where the Crawdads Sing movie, Witherspoon said:
“With a jaw-dropping mystery, stunning Southern setting, and endlessly fascinating female heroine at its center, I loved this book the moment I read it and am so excited to join forces with Elizabeth and her team to bring Delia’s truly moving page-turner to the screen.”
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is Discovered dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya isn't what they assert. Sensitive and wisdom, she has survived for years alone within the marsh that she calls home, finding friends within the gulls and chapters within the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched & loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a replacement life--until the unthinkable happens.
Where the Crawdads Sing is directly an exquisite ode to the wildlife, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the youngsters we once were, which we are all subject to the gorgeous and violent secrets that nature keeps.
Author Delia Owens said she was “thrilled” by the news of the difference, adding that Fox 2000 and Witherspoon are “the perfect team to bring Kya’s story to the massive screen.”
